Overall history of the model
The Porsche GT3 has had an illustrious history since being introduced in 1999 as a homologation model for the FIA GT3 cup. Since then, the car has been finely tuned and each time a new model appears it’s difficult to imagine how Porsche engineers can possibly improve on the previous iteration yet, somehow, they manage it.

Powered by a naturally aspirated, 4 litre flat-six masterpiece of an engine that produces 503bhp, the 992 GT3 is 50% track car and 50% road car. Porsche introduced double wishbone suspension at the front (the first time on a road-going 911), doubling the stiffness without sacrificing ride comfort on the road. The car is lighter with improved aerodynamics compared to the previous version.

With the 992 GT3, Porsche has chosen not to go down the same route as other performance car manufacturers. This is a car that has evolved over many years, being advanced with each iteration. The 992 GT3 is the culmination of all this work, this is a scalpel not a hammer, a finely tuned, minutely engineered thing of beauty.

Porsche 992 GT3 Deep Dive
The 992 GT3 is definitely a head turner. With its wonderful naturally aspirated engine and the option of a manual gearbox this is a car for purists. Each time a GT3 model is released, Porsche improves handling and performance over the last version, which is no small task because each model has been at the very top of its game.

Engine, performance and drivetrain
The car is powered by a 503bhp 4 litre flat-six. This is a sensational, high-revving marvel of an engine producing peak power at 8,400rpm and topping out at 9,000rpm. 0–62 comes in just 3.4 seconds; top speed 198mph.

The engine’s power is put through a choice of either a manual gearbox or Porsche’s super quick, 7-speed, automatic, double-clutch PDK gearbox. This works in conjunction with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential that lays down the 346lb-ft of torque beautifully smoothly.

Aerodynamics
Big improvements were made to the aerodynamics compared to the previous generation of GT3, bringing downforce up by 50% in normal driving mode and by 150% when the car is in a more aggressive set up.

The swan neck rear wing—with struts holding the wing from above—gives smoother airflow and increases the vacuum on the underside, thus creating more downforce. Air management systems on the underside of the car, and bonnet air vents (to direct cooling air to the radiators) were also added.

Weight saving
Through weight saving techniques such as lightweight glass, a carbon fibre bonnet, a new rear facia and a lighter weight LiFePO4 battery, the car weighs just 1,435kg.

Suspension
Perhaps the biggest advance with the 992 GT3 compared to any of its predecessors is the race-style double wishbone suspension at the front of the car. Previously all road-going 911s have used MacPherson struts, with double wishbone being saved for Porsche’s 911 race cars. What this means in practice is that the front axle can be twice as stiff, advancing the handling of the car without sacrificing ride comfort.

Drive
The 992 GT3 really is a well-rounded choice. It’s a great road car while being amazing on the track and also looking elegant. Step into the GT3 and you automatically feel like you are in a track-focused car, especially if fitted with the Clubsport pack’s roll cage and bucket seats.

The dash sports a large rev counter in the centre flanked either side by digital displays that can be customized to show the driver’s preferred data readouts. The interior is a very comfortable place to be and, even if the car has a PDK gearbox, the gear stick still looks like a manual.

Take the car out on the track and you soon realise what a focused machine this is. Switch the dash to the track screen and it will show just the essential info you’ll need. There is a huge amount of communication through the steering, which is sharp and responsive.

The car inspires confidence in the corners, you’ll be astounded by the amount of grip. It is possible to unstick the rear end, but it takes a concerted effort: pretty amazing for a rear-engined car and a testament to years of perfecting the 911.

Like the 991, the rear-wheel steering on the 992 eliminates oversteer and there is incredible response from the front end. Come out of the corner, plant your right foot and the first thing to strike you is how well the car puts down its power, the traction is amazing. The second thing to hit you will be the orchestral noise coming from that engine, something to behold!

Thanks to the double wishbone suspension, the ride is transformed from previous generations despite the car having double the spring rates. The 992 GT3 can go flat out around the Nürburgring all day—it shaved 17 seconds from its predecessor’s time—and then take you home in comfort. This is a refined, glorious, and spine-tingling drive whether on the track or the road.
