Introduced at the 1950 Motor Show, the Plus 4 was designed as a more powerful sibling for the 4/4 model. Powered by a robust Triumph 4 cylinder engine as opposed to the 4/4's Ford engine, it retained the original pre-war styling until significant changes in late 1953 introduced a curved radiator cowl, which is very much as it is today.
Body changes were not the only improvements made to the Plus 4 over the years as its strong competition pedigree prompted improvements to its engine and specification culminating in its peak of development with the Super Sports model introduced in February 1961.
Only 103 Super Sports were made between 1961 and 1968 and they are the most desirable of all Morgan models due to their competition successes at most of the major international races throughout the 1960's. The Triumph engine was tuned to produce 116 horsepower to easily accelerate the Super Sport to speeds in excess of 115 Mph. A lightweight aluminium body provided nimble handling in a design reminiscent of 1930s sports cars.
This rare, early High Line Plus 4 first left the factory bound for the USA on November 2nd 1960 and was first delivered to Fergus Fine Cars Inc. It later became the property of the Chance M Vought family. Vought was an American pioneer of aviation and a founding member of the Lewis and Vought Corporation, a company that had grown to becoming the second largest producer of American military planes leading up to the Second World War. Vought would later produce the gull-winged Chance Vought Corsair F4U famously known for its Navy Blue and Yellow livery, which is widely credited with winning the air war in the Pacific.
During the Vought family’s ownership a complete restoration was commissioned during which the Morgan was upgraded to Super Sports specification. Award winning Morgan Specialist, Morgan Motors of New England undertook the six-figure restoration with a fastidious attention to detail. Award winning body specialist Body Unlimited took up the paint suitably finishing the car in Navy Blue with Yellow accents, a fitting tribute to grace one of the most successful fighters of the Second World War. The interior was trimmed in contrasting Blue Hide with a Mohair soft top and tonneau cover.
The car was later purchased and exported into the United Kingdom, where it was UK registered in June 2011. Prior to the sale Morgan Motors carried out an extensive service as well as full detail to Concours standard at a cost of $9,574. Its most recent proprietor acquired the car in March 2012 adding it to a collection of the finest vintage cars as well as aircraft.
Today, having completed limited mileage since the aforementioned restoration, this Super Sport presents in superb condition and comes accompanied by a commendable history file including its original US Title document. This exceptional Plus 4 is located in our showrooms just outside London and available to view immediately.
